The Medieval Village of Óbidos
One of the 7 Wonders of Portugal
Tour Details
On this tour we will visit the medieval village of Óbidos and its surrounding walls, believed to have been founded by the Celts in 308 BC. It was later conquered by the Romans, then the Visigoths, and finally the Muslims, who built its castle (one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal!). It was conquered by the Portuguese under King Afonso Henriques in 1148. In 1282, King Dinis gifted the village to Queen Saint Isabel, hence the name "Village of Queens". Besides the wonderful local gastronomy, it is from there that the famous Ginjinha, a liqueur made from the sour cherry fruit (Ginja), originates. OPTIONAL: This tour can be used to visit other places such as the Monastery of Batalha or Alcobaça, which are also part of the 7 Wonders of Portugal. It is possible to visit Fátima or even Nazaré.
